How to Choose a Breast Prosthesis or Breast Forms

To achieve the best fit possible, Park Mastectomy Supply offers many types of breast forms (breast prosthesis) in multiple shapes and sizes to meet any mastectomy need. For the optimal fit, our goal is to match your existing breast, and we are here to assist you in any way.

If you need personal guidance, please email Janet Park at JLpark423@aol.com or call (866) 699-9612 Pacific Standard Time, 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Please note that your doctor may advise you to wear a poly-fill breast form or a foam breast form for 6-8 weeks and then be fitted for a silicone breast form.

Breast forms (breast prosthesis) may be silicone, foam, or poly-fill    . These are all approiate at different times in your mastectomy recovery.

Silicone breast forms are soft and closely resemble the natural breast. There are many attributes available in silicone breast forms such as, lightweight, contact (attachable), heat reduction technology, moldable back, and swim forms.

  • Lightweight silicone breast forms are 25%-35% lighter than standard weight silicone forms.
  • Contact breast forms or attachable breast forms adhere directly to the skin and may relieve pressure on the shoulders. This also gives you the choice for lower-cut clothing.
  • Advanced heat reduction technology built into breast forms offer relief from perspiration. This type form is more comfortable. Trulife's BodiCool and Amoena's Comfort + breast forms fill this need.
  • Moldable back breast forms have a soft back layer inside the breast form that adapts to an uneven chest wall to give a close, gentle fit for added comfort.
  • The swim form has a protective shield over the silicone to allow use in chlorine and salt water. The Amoena 149 swim form is our best seller.
There are 4 shapes available in breast forms: triangle, teardrop, oval, and heart-shaped. Each shape fits a specific need for the customer.
  • Triangle breast forms are the most versatile, fitting a variety of body and surgery types. This form most closely resembles the mature breast with a shallow profile fit (more breast tissue below the nipple than above). The breast form should be worn with the smallest curve at the top of the bra cup.
  • The teardrop breast form has a taper at the top extension which may be positioned in any direction for an optimal fit.
  • Oval breast forms have a natural full profile, and are recommended for use after bilateral surgeries. They also fit well in underwire and soft cup mastectomy bras.
  • Heart shape breast forms are versatile and can be positioned in any direction for best fit, and also fit well with underwire bras.
  • Many silicone breast forms are available in tawny or sable colors.
Silicone breast forms are also available in either asymmetrical or symmetrical shape.
  • Asymmetric breast forms replace the missing breast tissue at upper chest wall and underarm for more radical mastectomy surgeries. They are side-specific either right or left breast.
  • Symmetric breast forms fit a variety of body types and surgeries, and fit either right or left breast.
Partial breast forms, shapers, equalizers, enhancers, and shell breast forms are silicone forms used after lumpectomies and partial mastectomy. They help to balance uneven breast size or shape after reconstruction, and help to enhance smaller breasts.

Your profile fit needs to be determined when choosing a silicone breast form. There are three profile fits: shallow, average, and full.
  • Shallow fit describes the more mature breast with more soft breast tissue that fits lower in the bra cup.
  • Average fit describes equal breast tissue above and below the nipple with firm breast tissue.
  • Full fit has a round appearance which requires a mastectomy bra that the bottom of the cup supports the breast forms and the top provides more coverage for upper part of the breast.

Foam breast forms (polyurethane) are used after mastectomy when a lightweight form is needed. They are lighter and cooler than silicone breast forms; however, they do not drape like the natural breast. The forms are used for post-surgery, leisure and/or moderate activities. There are two types of foam forms: weighted or non-weighted.
  • Weighted foam breast forms have a small metal core that assists in keeping the form from shifting.
  • Non-Weighted foam breast forms are lighter and less expensive.
Poly-fill breast forms are soft puffs of medical-grade fiber that are worn with post mastectomy camisoles or leisure mastectomy bras during your mastectomy recovery.  Some forms have an opening which allows ladies to remove some of the fiber for a more customized fit. Poly-fill forms are the least expensive option of all breast forms.

How to Choose Post Mastectomy Bras

All Park Mastectomy Supply mastectomy bras have pockets in both cups so that you may wear a breast prosthesis in either the right or left side.
Choosing a well-fitting bra after mastectomy will make a difference in your comfort and peace of mind.

UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT BREAST PROFILES CAN YIELD THE BEST FIT.

There are three distinct profiles to describe breast shape: shallow, average, and full. The profile type is not dependent on cup size. For example a D cup may actually have a shallow profile and an A cup may have a full profile.
Shallow Profile breast form or Mastectomy Bra Average Profile breast form or Mastectomy Bra Full Profile breast form or Mastectomy Bra

The breast tissue drapes in the lower cup of the bra and is often seen on the mature woman with soft breast tissue. The shallow profile customer requires a bra with a small bottom cup to push the breast tissue up.

There is an equal amount of breast tissue on the top and bottom of the breast, with a more rounded appearance in the upper cup area. The average profile customer usually has firm breast tissue and a round profile.

Full profile breast has the roundest appearance. The full profile customer requires a bra that provides not only bottom cup support but also support and coverage for the upper part of the breast.
