How to choose a breast prosthesis (Breast Form)

To achieve the best fit possible, Park Mastectomy Supply offers many types of breast forms (breast prostheses) in multiple shapes and sizes to meet any post mastectomy need.  For the optimal fit, our goal is to match your existing breast, and we are here to assist you with the following information.

If you need personal guidance, please call Janet Park (866) 699-9612 Pacific Standard Time, 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Please note that your doctor may advise to you wait for 6-8 weeks to be fitted for a silicone breast form, and to wear a poly-fill breast form or a foam breast form in the interim.

Breast forms (breast prostheses) come in 3 different types, and each has their benefits at different times in your post surgery recovery: silicone breast form, foam breast forms, and poly-fill breast forms.

Silicone breast forms are soft and most closely resembles the natural breast.  There are many attributes also available in silicone breast forms such as lightweight, contact (attachable), heat reduction technology, moldable back breast forms, and swim forms:

  • Lightweight silicone breast forms are 25%-35% lighter than standard weight silicone forms for a more comfortable yet natural appearance.

  • Contact breast forms or attachable breast forms forms adhere directly to the skin and relieves pressure on the shoulders for women with certain medical conditions.  This gives a woman the choice for lower-cut clothing, if desired.

  • Advanced heat reduction technology built into breast forms offer relief from perspiration making these type form more comfortable to wear.  Trulife's BodiCool and Amoena's Comfort + breast forms fill this need.

  • Moldable back is a soft back layer inside the breast form that adapts to an uneven chest wall for newer surgeries and gives a close, gentle fit for added comfort.

  • The swim form has a protective shield over the silicone to allow use in chlorine and salt water.  The Amoena 149 swim form is our best seller.

There are 4 shapes available: triangle, teardrop, oval, and heart-shaped.  Each shape fits a specific need for the customer.

  • Triangle shape breast forms are the most versatile since they fit a variety of body and surgery types.  This shape most closely resembles the mature breast with shallow profile fit (more breast tissue under nipple than above). The breast form should be worn with the smallest curve at the top of bra cup.
  • Teardrop breast form has a taper at top extension and can be positioned in any direction for optimal fit.
  • Oval breast form has a natural full profile, and is recommended for use after bilateral surgeries.  Also fits well in underwire and softcup mastectomy bras.
  • Heart shape breast forms are versatile and can be positioned in any direction for best fit, and fit well with underwire bras.
  • Many silicone breast forms are available in tawny or dark sable colors.

Silicone breast forms are also available in either asymmetrical or symmetrical design shape.

  • Asymmetric breast forms replace the missing breast tissue at upper chest and underarm from more radical mastectomy surgeries.  They are side-specific either right or left breast.
  • Symmetric breast forms fit a variety of body types and surgeries, and fit either right or left breast.

Partials breast forms, shapers, equalizers, enhancers, and shell breast forms are silicone forms used after lumpectomies and partial breast mastectomy surgeries.  They help to balance uneven breast size or shape after reconstruction, and help to enhance a smaller breast.

Your profile fit needs to be determined when choosing a silicone breast form.  There are three profile fits: shallow, average, and full.

  • Shallow fit describes the more mature breast with soft breast tissue that fits lower in the bra cup.
  • Average fit describes equal breast tissue above and below the nipple with firm breast tissue.
  • Full fit has a round appearance which requires a mastectomy bra that bottom cup supports and coverage for upper part of breast.

Form breast forms (polyurethane) are used after mastectomy when a lightweight form is needed.  They are lighter and cooler than silicone breast forms; however, they do not drape like the natural breast.  The forms are used for post-surgery, leisure and/or moderate activities. There are two types of foam forms: weighted or non-weighted.

  • Weighted foam breast forms have a small metal core that assists in keeping the form from shifting.

  • Non-Weighted foam breast forms are lighter and less expensive.

Poly-fil breast forms are soft puffs of medical-grade fiber that are worn with post-mastectomy camisoles or leisure mastectomy bras during the recovery period.  Some forms have an opening which allows ladies to remove some of the fiber for a more customized fit.  Poly-fil forms are the least expensive option of all breast forms.

How to choose Post Mastectomy Bras

All Park Mastectomy Supply post surgery bras have pockets in both cups to that you may wear a breast prosthesis in either the right or left cup or both bra cups (bilateral).

Choosing a well-fitting bra after mastectomy will make a difference in your comfort and peace of mind.

Mastectomy bras are also sold in profile fits of shallow, average, and full.  After determining what your breast profile fit is, make sure you select a bra and breast form in the similar profile fit.  This information is provided in each of our product descriptions.

UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT BREAST PROFILES CAN YIELD THE BEST FIT.
There are three distinct profiles to describe breast shape: shallow, average, and full. The profile type is not dependent on cup size. For example a D cup customer can actually have a shallow profile and an A cup customer can have a full profile.

Shallow Profile breast form Average Profile breast form Full Profile breast form

The breast tissue drapes in the lower cup of the bra and is often seen on the mature woman with soft breast tissue. The shallow profile customer requires a bra with a small bottom cup to push the breast tissue up.

There is an equal amount of breast tissue on the top and bottom of the breast, with a more rounded appearance in the upper cup area. The average profile customer usually has firm breast tissue and a round profile.

Has the most round appearance. The full profile customer requires a bra that provides not only bottom cup support but also support and coverage for the upper part of the breast.

Most mastectomy bras have adjustable straps, cups with high front and side trim line, and fit higher under the arm.
